Acolytes are youth, male and female, who assist the clergy during worship services. They are normally scheduled to serve on teams of four for both the early and late services, with variations for special services throughout the year. Training is provided periodically for each of the three positions—Torch Bearer, 2nd Cross, and Captain—and for special services, such as the Christmas and Easter seasons. Vestments are provided as well as a handmade personal cross for each acolyte. While we have no specific age or grade level requirements to serve as an acolyte at St. Catherine’s, we have determined three necessary attributes that best demonstrate the level of maturity needed:

1. Sitting quietly and attentively during the service
2. Following the bulletin and fully participating in the worship service
3. A personal desire on the part of the young person choosing to serve in this position.

We plan a trip to the National Acolyte Festival in Washington, D.C. in alternate years. Acolytes of middle school age and older are invited to this wonderful event.
