Grace upon grace: Reflections from your clergy

The Rev. Sarah K. Fisher

Dear Friends:

Summer is upon us! The Blessing of the Bikes and the Parish Picnic on June 3 were both full of joy and delight—big thanks to Fred Massey for heading that up and all the men of the parish who helped not only feed us, but provide scholarship money for our college freshmen. I know I speak for the whole parish when I say thank you! And thanks to Phil Spessard for capturing some photos (below) of both.

Tomorrow I will be heading to Seattle for a week at the College of Congregational Development or CCD. I first learned about CCD about 3 years ago and fell in love with the concept. CCD seeks to marry the academics and tools of organizational development with the realities of congregational health and vitality. During the week, we look at emotional health, spiritual growth, organizational functionality and communication efficacy all through the lens of the work we do as a parish. Although I’m a graduate of CCD, I continue to learn from the wisdom of the program.

This year I return to CCD as a trainer intern. The Diocese of Atlanta is considering bringing CCD to Atlanta, and in preparation for that possibility, I’m training to be a trainer. I covet your prayers this week. Of note—this program starts at 7:00 AM and ends at 9:00 PM and there aren’t many breaks in between, so I will be hard to reach, and I won’t be checking my email at all. I’ll return emergency calls as I’m able, but please know most business will need to wait until I return on the 17th. In the event of an emergency, please call the parish office or me and I’ll connect you with a local priest.

Interested in learning more about CCD?

A final note—this week marks my 1 year anniversary at St. Catherine’s. My heart is full. It is such a joy to be here. Thank you for being who you are.

Peace, joy and love,

Sign our cards for Scotland Pilgrims

On July 1, we will send twenty-one pilgrims, youth, and adults journeying with them, on their long-anticipated 10-day pilgrimage to Scotland. During the next few Sundays, everyone in the parish is invited to sign the cards we will have available in the foyer to wish them Godspeed.

Stephen Ministry Come & See Luncheon

Sunday, June 24, 11:30 am

Stephen Ministry equips and empowers lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide individual, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting for reasons such as divorce, grief, a terminal illness, loss of a job, relocation, an empty nest, retirement, hospitalization, loneliness, and many other stresses or challenges.

Perhaps you, too, have heard that small voice saying, “Maybe I could do this”? Saint Catherine’s is seeking individuals who would like to train as Stephen Ministers this fall. If you have ever thought about joining this life-changing ministry, or if you just want to know more about it, then come and see what it is all about in Parish Hall after the 10 am service on June 24. At this casual luncheon your Stephen Ministry team will make a short presentation and answer any questions you may have. Please join us! For information please contact David Moore,, (404) 309-7793.

MUST Summer Lunch Making

It’s that time again for MUST Ministries' Lunch Making! Each year during the summer months, children who are eligible to receive a free or reduced lunch during the school year can have a free lunch delivered to them through MUST's Summer Lunch Program.

  • Make lunches! - Come to the Parish Hall on either or both dates: Wednesday, June 20 and Wednesday, June 27, 9:30 to 11:30 am, to help us make 2,000 lunches for this program. All Youth and older are welcome to participate.

You can leave your food donations in the black canvas bins by the Outreach tables.

  • Book collection – This year, in conjunction with providing lunches, MUST is having a Book Day distribution each week. Donations of gently used books (non-religious, non-violent) for all ages, preschool to high school, are welcome. Book donations can also go in the black canvas bins by the Outreach tables.

From Mother Sarah

June 1, 2018

Dear Friends:

Summer is here and there is so much alive and growing in the earth and here at St. Cat’s. It’s undeniable that we’re in a season of transition. We currently have three staff positions open, although I’m hopeful that some of those may soon be filled. I will update you soon as I have more to share.

This week, our dear Becky Adams submitted her resignation [see below]. We wish her well in her new endeavor and look forward to continuing to see her on Sundays as a member of the parish. Moving into a season, when much of the staff will be new, gives us an opportunity to evaluate what we most need in our parish support staff team. Part of our work in this transition time is considering anew the needs of the parish and what how the staff can best be configured to meet those needs.

For this reason, and to allow time for sound discernment, we are going to take our time in filling the position of Parish Secretary. We will outsource our bulletin and bulletin inserts to a strong communicator who has a proven history of excellence in producing bulletins for Episcopal liturgies for other parishes in the area. She knows the liturgy and has a passion for making bulletins welcoming and inviting for newcomers.

We have contracted with our own Rachel Hutton (photo at right) to fill some of Becky’s duties on an interim, part time basis. For the summer, Rachel will be with us Monday-Thursday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. She will begin June 4th, shadowing Becky.

How does this impact the members of St. Cat’s? Overall, I hope you will find minimal disruption and change. But there are a few things that we could use your help with.

  • Changes to the prayer list and server rota will be more challenging as we will print bulletins on Wednesdays. This means if you need to change the date you are serving, you’ll need to let the office know, ideally, by Monday afternoon. Likewise, prayer requests will need to be into the office by Monday afternoon as well. We can certainly make changes and additions after that time, they simply won’t be included in the bulletin that week. Prayer requests received later in the week can still be read in the service.
  • If you would like to help staff the parish office in the afternoon, we’d love to have you! Please contact Becky or Rachel if you’d like to be on the list of volunteers. We’ll follow up with requests and let you know when your presence would be most helpful.
  • Let us know where we can improve. If there’s something we’re missing, we may not know it! Did we forget your birthday? Did your name get left off the prayer list? Did we spell something wrong? Let us know—it was likely an unintentional error, which we’ll apologize for, and correct moving forward.

Even as change can be stressful, it is also exciting. My journey with you all continues to be a joy for which I am profoundly grateful.

Peace & all good,

Becky Adams resigns as Parish Secretary

Dear Friends:

I write to tell you that Becky Adams is leaving her post as St. Catherine's Parish Secretary. She has received a wonderful offer and I can't fault her for taking it. It's a great move for her. She and I are both delighted that she may now formally become a member of St. Cat's. She loves it here and intends to continue to worship here. Already a Stephen Minister, I can't wait to see the gifts that Becky will bring, in a new way, to our parish.

Becky's last day at the parish will be June 8th. In partnership with the vestry and staff, I will be looking at creative ways to fill the void Becky leaves. More details will follow in due time, but in the meantime, please make sure to say thank you to Becky for her ministry as Parish Secretary and come share in some sheet cake at the Parish Picnic and wish her well in her new adventure. In the meantime, if you have questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at

Peace & all good,

The Rev. Sarah K. Fisher

Volunteer Corner: “Do you have a minute?”

By Pat Pepper

We all have 1,440 in a day... Do you have a minute?

I know I have asked this question before. However I still stand in amazement at how many of the St. Cat’s family can get so much accomplished in those 1,440 minutes, and then say ‘Yes’ to one more thing. Are you willing to add one more thing to your list? And if you don’t have a list, are you willing to start one?

St. Catherine’s needs a minute (or so) of your time. Here are some examples:

  • 4 hours per month to answer phones in the church office.
  • 1 hour per month to create the bread pick up schedule for our Bread Pickup and Delivery Ministry. Ron Cook needs a replacement after many years of service.
  • 2 hours to learn St. Cat’s sound system and then assist Bill Ivey.
  • 2 hours to attend the Quarterly Ministry Team meetings, a great opportunity to hear more about the work St. Catherine’s is doing. (Next one is coming up on August 7.)
  • 30 minutes to look at the Vacation Bible School donation board and pick up an item for the July VBS.
  • 3 hours to join St. Cat’s members and our friends from Holy Comforter and attend a picnic and hike June 12 at Red Top Mountain State Park (sounds like so much fun!)
  • 15 minutes and read this Wheel newsletter. Read about the many opportunities for service.

If you have questions, give me a call. We can chat for a minute or more. I have many more ideas of where your time will be received as a welcome gift. When you look at your calendar this week what does it say about you? How are you going to spend those 10,800 minutes (total minutes in a week)?

Interested in finding your purpose for ministry? Contact Pat Pepper, Coordinator of Volunteer Ministry, 770.971.1269 or to get connected!

Do you know about these ministries?

In the month of June we are highlighting ministries which are part of our Fellowship Ministry Team:

  • June 11-17: Cats on Wheels — This week we celebrate the life and work of Cats On Wheels. If you are old enough to be eligible for an AARP card (although card is not required!) and have an adventurous spirit, you are invited to join this lively group of active senior adults for monthly lunches and trips to places of interest. To get on the mailing list for all their activities contact Alan Certain, 770.933.9277,
  • June 18-24: Flower Delivery — This week we celebrate the life and work of Flower Delivery, volunteers who deliver a smile by taking the altar flowers after services on Sundays to parishioners who are ill at home or in the hospital, and others to whom we would like to show special remembrance or thanks. Directions are provided, volunteers serve in rotation. To find out more about being part of this ministry please contact Margaret Shaw,

Dear St. Catherine’s,

It has been a wonderful three years working at the church. You have welcomed me, loved me, and supported me. I am grateful for all of you. I am excited to be able to worship on Sundays and get involved in other ways. My heart is truly full.

God's peace,
Becky Adams

Dear St. Catherine’s,

On the last Sunday in April, when Bill and I were in Dallas, our cat sitter sent her customary daily text. But this time, instead of an image of Bridget peering suspiciously from behind a piece of furniture or glowering from under a bed, I beheld a flat of beautiful green and flowering plants. When I returned, I opened the card and discovered that they were in thanks for my work with the Concert Series. But I still do not know who delivered them or what group organized the delivery. Whoever you are, thank you! And thank you to the parish family for recognizing my work!

I should make two things clear. I do not do this work alone—I have a wonderful committee, and receive advice and support from the Drs. Williams and Mother Sarah. The concerts could not have their professional polish without all these folks. Nor would I be able to bring in the caliber of musicians without the generosity of the Friends of Music. The second matter is that I get an great sense of accomplishment and pleasure from the Concert Series, and that really is reward enough. I enjoy beautiful music in a welcoming space, I see the appreciation and pleasure in the audiences, and I have met a lot of really great people. It is astonishing to me how eager these very fine musicians are to come to us for what is not a princely sum, and what nice people they are!

Thank you, all of you, for allowing me to continue this rewarding work.

Martha Bowden

Letters have been received from the following to acknowledge gifts from our parish:
