Grace upon grace

The Rev. Sarah K. Fisher

This is the irrational season
when love blooms bright and wild.
Had Mary been filled with reason
there’d have been no room for the child.
—“After Annunciation” by Madeleine L’Engle

My friends, the arrival of the Holy Child fast approaches. The door between heaven and earth will soon fling wide open. May we prepare our hearts to welcome Christ’s return.

I look forward to celebrating the joys of this season with you.

With anticipation and love,

From all of our Clergy, Staff, Wardens, Vestry and People
We wish you and yours a most blessed and joyous Christmas and Christmastide!

Christmas Elves - the morning of Christmas Eve, December 24

Be a Christmas Elf at Emmaus House! Every year, St. Catherine's parishioners go to be “elves” at their annual Christmas Festival, helping to distribute presents to 900+ smiling faces and escorting the guests to various activities. Emmaus House is an Episcopal Community Center which predominantly serves the residents of Peoplestown & Summerhill neighborhoods in Atlanta. At Emmaus House, people from all walks of life work together joyfully to diminish poverty and its broader consequences. Each year, neighborhood children come to Emmaus House on Christmas Eve morning where they and their families celebrate with gifts, snacks and entertainment.

It’s a wonderful activity, guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit, and we would love for you to join us! We will gather at St. Catherine's at 7:00 AM to carpool. All are invited. For questions please contact Gina Baumann,

Special Christmas Fund

Each Christmas our parishioners give to create a Special Christmas Fund, used for members of this congregation who have suffered in any number of ways, to support them at a time of year when limited resources are painfully evident. The Rector, in consultation with the staff, makes the decision as to how this fund will be used. If you would like to give to this fund simply write a check to St. Catherine’s and clearly mark it for the “Special Christmas Fund,” or online through your account in The City. Any amount is gratefully accepted.

Christmas Eve Receptions - cookies requested

Festive receptions will follow the Christmas Eve services this year. We invite you to donate cookies for the 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm worship times, please bring them to the Parish Hall prior to the service. Thank you!

Sharing the story of St. Catherine’s

The Rev. Sarah K. Fisher

Reports for the Annual Meeting, which will be held on January 20, 2019, are due on January 11. This year we are trying something a little different. We are asking Ministry Conveners and Ministry Team chairs to help us better tell the story of St. Catherine’s, as realized through our vibrant ministries. This year, we are asking for your ministry reports in a very specific way. Below you will find a link to an online form (our preferred method) or you can print and bring your responses to the office. Each team is invited to answer the three questions below and submit, if you’d like, a picture that you think captures your ministry. We know it’s hard to pick just one, but ask that you try. We are excited to hear about where we’ve been and where we’re going!!

Here is the link -- ideally, please use this! And note that answers are limited to 1600 characters, about 300 words.

The Questions (please limit your response to each question to 300 words):

  1. Tell of a time or experience where you felt your ministry or ministry team really shined! Or tell a story of how your ministry or ministry team made a significant impact this year.
  2. What are your hopes and plans for this ministry in 2019?
  3. Are there folks who deserve special thanks for their work in this ministry?

A Twelfth Night Party!

Saturday, January 5

The Staff of St. Cat's invites you to a super-low-key, come as you are, dessert potluck 12th Night Party. Bring a dessert to share and a branch from your Christmas tree to burn at our bonfire. All who wish can play in our White Elephant gift exchange. Saturday, January 5th from 7:00-9:00 PM. For more information, contact Rachel Hutton.

Sundays and Wednesdays in Epiphany

"It's time..."

An offering for Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings from the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE). "So much of our stress and anxiety drives from our pollution of time. God has given us the gift of time, and called it holy, yet we often experience time as a curse. In a series of short videos, the Brothers of SSJE invite us to recapture time as a gift." During Epiphany we will offer an adult formation class on Sunday mornings and on Wednesday evenings using the "It's Time..." curriculum from SSJE. You are invited to participate in any way that works for you.

Join us on Sunday mornings during the Christian Formation hour or on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm to be part of this conversation! All are welcome (and we'll even feed you dinner on Wednesday nights!) For more information, please contact Mother Sarah.

Karolyn's Retirement Party

Karolyn Olliffe will retire as Director of St. Catherine's Preschool at the end of 2018. Join us for a party to celebrate with her on Friday, January 11 at 7:00 pm. Please RSVP to Rachel Hutton by January 4.

If you would like to make a gift to honor Karolyn, you may do so by any of the following methods. We will present the gift to her on January 11.

- Check - payable to St. Catherine's Preschool or St. Catherine's Episcopal Church with memo "Karolyn Olliffe Purse"
- Current Preschool parents can give through "HeadMaster" online with memo "Karolyn Olliffe Purse"
- Church members can give through The City online and choose "Staff Gifts-Karolyn Purse"

Outreach collections benefit our neighbors in need

  • Thank you from Family Promise - A BIG thank you to all who participated in our recent collection for Family Promise in November. The coordinators were thrilled to have their shelves stocked with 28 activity bags, 21 sets of pajamas, 32 packs of wipes and almost 1,500 diapers donated by St. Catherine's parishioners. These items will be distributed to children throughout the year as they enter the Family Promise program. For questions regarding this outreach please contact Molly Banko,
  • Thank you from ECMS Food Pantry - Thank you to everyone who donated to East Cobb Middle School Food Pantry in December. January collection: for women of The Extension

Just like all of us, cold and flu season hits The Women's Extension hard every year. Living in close quarters and not having the option of missing work is a challenge for the women. The small items that we take for granted in our lives are a luxury for them. Beginning in January, please consider donating the following items:

Kleenex and tissues, cough drops, lip balm
Chewable vitamin C, Airbourne, Emergen C Immune
Herbal teas (echinacea, peppermint, lavender, anything caffeine-free), honey

Please bring your items to the collection bins which will be at the Outreach table across from the Parlor from January 6 to 20.

The Extension is a non-profit, community-supported organization serving Cobb County and the Atlanta area with both a men’s facility and a women’s facility in Marietta which provide addiction recovery services through a comprehensive Residential Recovery Program, outpatient counseling and various outreach initiatives. St. Catherine's volunteers provide dinner for the residents of the Women's Center on the third Sunday each month. Anyone is welcome to join us in this outreach ministry. For questions or suggestions please contact Marlene Stuart,, and Deborah Weigel,
